Before I begin, let me say that I'm an adult (to give this review some context).I read "The Merchant of Death" (Pendragon #1) a couple of weeks before ordering this book. I enjoyed "Merchant". I thought it was inventive and unusual, and it certainly addresses issues that young adults face. I'm sure kids enjoy reading books where their peers are heroes. This book is even better. I say that for two reasons. The setting of the first book is quite grim. That was appropriate for the story it told, but it was kind of a downer, reading about those people being exploited. This book's setting is incredible - a world covered entirely by water where humans live on floating, barge-like habitats. I love water, and if I could somehow visit that world, I would do so in a heartbeat. The other reason I like this book better is that the new Traveler we meet is incredibly endearing. I like Loor. She's a great person to have at your side. However, the Traveler we meet in this story is very funny, and that makes this book a lighter read (in tone) than the first one. He's also flawed, though, which makes things interesting. I relate to him better than I relate to Loor. (Does she have a flaw? I don't think I've spotted it yet.)Overall, I recommend this book with a big smile on my face. It's a good ride, the characters are endearing, the setting incredible, the themes well developed, and it leaves you wanting more.See you at Grolo's! Last one there buys the Sniggers!

Don't know why the Pendragon series never got hugely popular; this is my second time reading it, and it's excellent. I wish every kid (and adult) would take the time, they wouldn't be disappointed. It's magical, suspense-filled, has villains, heroes, the works. I'm buying the series (again), because when my daughter left home, she took her copies with her and I want my own.

I'm reading this series because my son read them and enjoyed them so much, and wanted to be able to talk about it with someone. Though this series is written for young teens, anyone who enjoys a good adventure will appreciate it. Cynical adults like myself will often see where the next turn might lead, but that doesn't take away from the truly amazing adventure at hand. MacHale has created a world (or worlds, or Halla, or territory, or...) that has its own rules, making it easy to achieve the required "suspension of disbelief" needed to lose oneself in this saga. One book in the series is not enough - you must read them all. this review will act as my commentary on the entire series. A+!

In this book, Bobby and Uncle Press are on their way to Cloral, the water world. All the people on Cloral live on boat-like cites and coexist in peace. The inhabitants of Coral make good use of their environment; water is used in many creative ways, from powering cool little gadgets to the material used in building. But Saint Dane has come to Cloral and so the perfect world will not be perfect much longer, unless Bobby, Press, and Spader can save it.When I read the first Pendragon book I was a little confused, trying to figure out whether or not I liked it. When I saw this book at the library, I decided to give this series another chance. And I am glad I did! This book is better then the first one. The authors writing has improved greatly and the story is more engaging and interesting. I really enjoyed reading about the fascinating and fantastical world of Cloral, as well as the introduction of the character Spader. I look forward to reading more of Bobby's adventures and the many worlds he will visit!

I won't be able to put an in-depth review since I read the book a while back and am on book 7 right now so my head is swimming with information from all the books. The second book in the Pendragon series throws the reader back into the territories of Halla. As we last read, Bobby had gotten back to Second Earth to realize that his life there was over. When Loor and Press come to drive him away back to another territory, he once again leaves behind Courtney Chetwynde and Mark Dimond, the two who he had been sending the journals to.This book has an even more enthralling storyline as you meet yet another traveler, Spader, a young guy from a territory completely underwater. You grow to like him and his "people-person" attitude. This book continues to show Saint Dane's power, and just what happens in the beginning (I don't want to spoil anything, but it has to do with two floating cities) has a very eerie feeling to it.This is a must have, as it connects the characters further along in the book and helps make way for book three.

Review

"This new edition of Martinich’s classic handbook is a treasure-trove of clear and intelligent advice about how to write philosophy essays.  It is the product of decades of reflection by a master teacher about how to help students master the skills of philosophical thinking, reading, and writing.  With excellent exposition and illuminating examples Martinich talks through the process of writing a quality philosophy essay, and the book is filled with excellent advice, bits of wise guidance, warnings, and helpful strategies.  Teaching philosophy typically involves written assignments, and there are few places to turn for help about how to write an excellent philosophical essay.  Martinich’s book is simply the best book available on the subject.  Part of the book deals with informal logic and the process of argumentation, but to me the most helpful chapters deal with composition and the process of writing itself – of identifying a topic, arriving at a theme or problem for a paper, developing a strategy for dealing with it, and writing coherent paragraphs and beyond.  Martinich takes the whole process seriously and walks the student through it with wit, sensitivity, and attention to detail.  All of us have students who can benefit from Martinich’s guidance.  Writing with such clarity and sensitivity about how to think and write philosophy is a remarkable achievement; the book is a resource that every philosophy teacher should know and recommend."  Michael Morgan, Indiana University

“There are several introductory texts to philosophical writing; Martinich’s is the best. Clear, concise, and cogent, Martinich not only discusses the qualities of good philosophical writing but, as always, displays them in a work that undergraduates from all disciplines can read with great benefit.” Mark Bernstein, Purdue University
