I am grateful for Dr. Weil for his just anger at the denial of aging, so prevalent in America. He excoriates the popular face-lifting, whose only purpose is to hide the age of person, and whose result is often a "plastic" immobile face. Dr. Weil also explains why young people run away from the old and the elderly--they are terrified of their own future fate, visible in the faces and bodies of the older people. I wish the good doctor talked more about the isolation of the aging, which is the elephant not many talk about. Especially I wish he talked about the isolation of aging women. While aging men succeed in dating younger women, aging women often fail to attract men who often measure a woman's attractiveness only by her external appearance.

Andrew Weil's book on "Healthy Aging" helped me to understand better how I can contribute towards my own aging process through simple accessible easy lifestyle changes while providing the science behind each recommendation. He made me understand that we are not slaves to our genes, but by changing our environment, through lifestyle changes, we can influence the genes that life served us. This to say that we can change some aspects of our make-up to push us towards a place of aging more gracefully and healthily. Hence, our destiny is in our own hands! We owe it to no one but ourselves to be happy, healthy and wealthy!

If you are over 50 and you haven't read this book you should.Dr. Weil appears to be spiritual not religious so keep that in mind as you read. He comments quite a bit on societies perception of aging. Hes decidedly NOT "anti-aging" and appears to believe that we should embrace aging and I fully agree. He addresses our American cultures aversion to getting old while many other cultures hold their aged in much higher reverence.Definitely worth a read. I don't agree with some of the things he says, but overall I consider Dr. Weil to be my health and fitness Guru.

I love Andrew Weil's website and I think very highly of his emphasis on healthy eating and nutrition, so I decided to pick up a couple of his books. This one is "just what the doctor ordered." The first half of the book is mainly devoted to theories about how to slow down the aging process. He discusses stem cell research and how embryonic stem cells might be able to grow new tissues and new organs, but it doesn't slow down the aging process. He also warns that multiplying new cells might also increase the risk for cancer.Weil also states that there is no evidence that eating fruits and vegetables and yogurt extend the length of life as much as it helps the quality of the life that we have. He also discusses HGH and mentions the bad side effects along with good news like increased muscle tone, better sex drive, etc. But none of these things amounts to a fountain of youth.He also mentions botox injections and restricted calorie diets and other anti-aging medicines, but none are proven to help. He finally suggests that we age gracefully by taking care of the body that we have the best that we can. He recommends the anti-inflammatory diet, which is heavy on fruits and vegetables (especially those with anti-oxidant properties), omega 3's (walnuts and salmon), white tea and green tea, and grains and legumes. Weil also recommends exercise (30 minutes a day) eight hours of sleep, relaxation/meditation, etc.But my favorite chapter in the book is when he talks about the value of aging. He notes that cheese is often better when it is aged, as is wine, whiskey, and even trees are beautiful when they are older. In the same way, people often are wiser and more beautiful on the inside, and so we shouldn't be so afraid of aging, even though there is good and bad associated with it.This is a very good book, and I highly recommend it.

On of the most informative books on mindful aging. Dr. Weil's philosophy of life is the backdrop for his sound, logical recommendations on how to age "successfully." Most folks give little thought to aging until it is too late and they are overweight and plagued with health challenges. This book will change one's thinking and gives specific ways to reverse these problems. Although this book was published 10 years ago, the information was cutting edge at the time. It is all very relevant. I keep it near my TV and read sections during the commercials. It plants kernels of wisdom each day.The book is a super value! It has the information to change the senior years of your life!!!

Lots of useful information in this book and an easy read. One does not have to read from front to back; rather one can pick different chapters depending on current interests.

Dr. Andrew Weil's book is a good source of level headed and knowledgeable advice. He cuts through a lot of the different beliefs floating around about what vitamins and supplements are good to take with science--of all things. I found that very helpful. I also enjoyed how he discusses a variety of areas that contribute to healthy aging, spiritual as well as physical. The entire book is permeated by the notion that there is such as thing as healthy aging, which you can influence although life does throw many of us some serious curves. And that aging is not a crime, but can be experienced as the coming to fullness of a fine wine!! If you are thinking of botox, read this first!

Well illustrated, and packed with information, including identification of the species of woods used. Though it misses the cuparius (cooper), the list of recognized woodworking trades is extensive.

For a reenactor trying to reproduce pieces, this is worthless.

This is a dense, detailed read on how Romans worked with wood in every way imaginable. It's great for someone who is really into ancient history or perhaps the history of woodworking, but I think the average reader will find it too dry. I learned a lot, but since I was hoping to get ideas to integrate my woodworking class with history it wasn't really what I was looking for.

As a profesional woodworker making Colonial reproductions for over 30 years I find all the roots of Greek Revival in this book. A must read for the American craftsman.Steve Benson

About the Author

Pulitzer Prize winning historian Irwin Unger has been teaching American history for over forty years on both coasts. Born and largely educated in New York, he has lived in California, Virginia, and Washington State. He is married to Debi Unger and they have five children, now all safely past their college years. Professor Unger formerly taught at California State University at Long Beach, the University of California at Davis, and New York University. He is now professor emeritus at NYU.  Professor Unger’s professional interests have ranged widely within American history. He has written on Reconstruction, the Progressive Era, and on the 1960s. His first book, The Greenback Era, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1965. Since then he has written The Movement: The New Left and (with Debi Unger) The Vulnerable Years, Turning Point: 1968, The Best of Intentions (about the Great Society), LBJ: A Life, The Guggenheims, A Family History. He has just completed a book on the 1960s and he and Debi Unger are working on a biography of General George C. Marshall.

About the Author
Thomas Watson (c. 1620-1686), the Puritan preacher and author, was probably born in Yorkshire, although the exact place and date of his birth are unknown. He studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge (BA, 1639; MA, 1642), where he was apparently a diligent student. Certainly his intellect is apparent in his writings, which show a profound grasp of the English language, as well as a solid understanding of Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. He quotes from the early church fathers, and his familiarity with the breadth of the scriptural canon is stunning. Cross-references from the entire biblical corpus are sprinkled throughout his sermons, revealing a deep understanding of many texts obscure to most modern day Bible students. A solid understanding of history, botany, medicine, physics, the classics, logic, and various trades are revealed in his sermons.

After living for a time with the Puritan family of Lady Mary Vere, the widow of Sir Horace Vere, Baron of Tilbury, in 1646 Watson went to St. Stephen s, Walbrook, London, where he served as lecturer for about ten years, and then as rector for another six years. In about 1647, he married Abigail Beadle, daughter of John Beadle, an Essex minister of Puritan convictions. They had at least seven children in the next thirteen years, four of whom died young.

During the Civil War, Watson began expressing his strong Presbyterian views. He had sympathy for the king, however. He was one of the Presbyterian ministers who went to Oliver Cromwell to protest the execution of Charles I. Along with Christopher Love, William Jenkyn, and others, he was imprisoned in 1651 for his part in a plot to restore the monarchy. Although Love was beheaded, Watson and the others were released after petitioning for mercy.

Watson was formally reinstated to his pastorate in Walbrook in 1652. Spurgeon says of him:

he executed for nearly sixteen years the office of a faithful pastor with great diligence and assiduity. Happy were the citizens who regularly attended so instructive and spiritual a ministry. The church was constantly filled, for the fame and popularity of the preacher were deservedly great. Going in and out among his flock, fired with holy zeal for their eternal welfare, his years rolled on pleasantly enough amid the growing respect of all who knew him.
With the Act of Uniformity in 1662, Watson was ejected from his pastorate. He continued to preach in private whenever he had the opportunity. In 1666, after the Great Fire of London, Watson prepared a large room for public worship, welcoming anyone who wished to attend. After the Declaration of Indulgence took effect in 1672, Watson obtained a license for Crosby Hall, Bishopsgate, which belonged to Sir John Langham, a patron of nonconformists. Watson preached there for three years before Stephen Charnock joined him. They ministered together until Charnock s death in 1680.

Watson kept working until his health failed. He then retired to Barnston, in Essex, where he died suddenly in 1686 while engaged in private prayer. He is buried in the same grave as his father-in-law who served as a minister at Barnston. Watson s works several of which have been republished by the Trust are a legacy that have continued to be a blessing to those who love sound, heart-searching exposition of the Scriptures.
