I read this first at age 18 and it changed my life. I've loved all of Tom Robbins work since. His recent memoir is also one of my favorite books ever. This is where it all started for me, though, and I recently re-read the book, and I still love it. This book had a big influence on me and has helped me live my life in a way that is deeply satisfying. And the writing! Tom Robbins use of language is creative and intense. I find myself rereading sections to get the most out of them, because they're deeply complex and beautiful and interesting, and often funny. Don't miss out on Tom Robbins, and this book is a great place to start.
This book changed my life! From the power of scent and its connection to memory to the trove of original characters and situations to the almighty beet at the center of the story, Robbins' fourth novel is just as relevant today, I imagine, as when it first published back in 1984.Robbins writes in long sentences, using a type of poetic-prose that would be off-putting as too ooey-gooey or smarmy if it weren't so brilliant. No. The writing is superb, intricate, and sensual. This book gets inside you, makes you really think about the nature of reality and how the everyday things we do to make ourselves alluring are intertwined with history that spans continents, and how we can become better people by making small adjustments to our everyday way of thinking.This book is right in line with Robbins' ouevre. I've read all his novels and rank it right up there with "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" and "Skinny Legs and All" in terms of his best work. If you haven't already read it and you're a fan of his other books or anything in the realm of fantasy, magical realism, literary fiction, or science fiction, I highly recommend this novel.
I used to think of this as one of my favorite books so I recommended it to my book club. I still loved it the second time around, but it is a little too fantastical for my current tastes. Nonetheless, Robbins has an incredible way with words - from phenomenal metaphors to startling references to not so subtle humor. The artful language, though, tends to distract a bit from the story.The problem also with it being my second time around, is that there wasn't that amazement at what happens in the lives of our heroes. Interestingly, though, is that it didn't end the way I remembered. Instead, it ended the way I wanted it to.Since reading this the first time, I've read pretty much everything Robbins has written. I still put Jitterbug Perfume at the top of all his books.
As usual, Tom Robbins delivers a hilarious, goofy story with a substantial, deeper meaning underlying every word. I enjoyed the historical detail and aspect to the epic life of Alobar, but also was challenged to think about death and the meaning of life in a whole new light. I highly suggest this book to anyone who loves a good laugh, witty observations on the finer aspects of human existance, and a little deeper thought sprinkled in the mix.
I first bought this novel over 20 years ago, then - like a stunod, I decided to purge myself of excess chi and donated all my old paperbacks to the small lending library on some tiny freaking island off the coast of SC. Recently, a very cool, funny & cerebral young lady rented the spare bedroom in my apartment and (having never forgotten the enjoyment of reading this book over & over again) I re-bought Jitterbug Perfume for her as a welcome gift. Inside the cover I wrote a Robbins reminder for my new roomie: "A sense of humor, properly developed, is superior to any religion so far devised." This philosophy has helped me pull myself out of the mires of fear, self doubt, regret and loss to - at the very least - be able to conjure a wry smile at the trials and tribulations of life in the face of looming despair. BACK OFF big D, I will NOT succumb! At most, it has given me the ability to laugh and thumb my nose at nay-sayers and people with funky negativo vibes. Keep searching for that elusive beet and enjoy the journey. This novel is a "must read" for 20 or 30 or 40 or 50 or 60 etc. somethings! So many folks are in such a hurry to become adults that they forget that life should be an adventure wherein we indulge in a little fun (that's the secret to NOT getting old.)
