Review
Praise for It Gets Worse: "Dawson exhibits his signature brand of twisted humor and neuroses in his second volume of personal essays. [His] journey is fraught with sadness…and comedy…His self-deprecating and outrageous humor…deserves comparison to David Sedaris." (Publishers Weekly)“These 13 essays collected here are…humorous, but some are quite moving…One a humor scale of 1 to 10, 1 being meh and 10 being a hoot, Dawson’s essays earn a solid 7. Teen fans of David Sedaris will enjoy Dawson’s perky essays." (Booklist)"Shane Dawson brings us possibly – no, definitely – the most hilarious read of summer. In this uproarious essay collection, Dawson unleashes all his wit and explores his mortifying childhood and every awkward moment as he came to terms with bisexuality. Overflowing with humor and sharp observations on the struggles surrounding modern culture, It Gets Worse is comfort food for the millennial soul." (Sunset Magazine)“If you're a fan of his, it's safe to say this is already pre-ordered for you, but if you haven't been introduced to this YouTube sensation, I'd recommend checking him out if you're a millennial who loves to laugh.” (Bustle)"Like Dawson’s previous book, I Hate Myselfie, It Gets Worse is a collection of humorous autobiographical essays...laced with both bracing honesty and Dawson’s signature humor." (Entertainment Weekly (ew.com))Praise for I Hate Myselfie:“Though Shane is infamous for his biting wit and crude humor, I Hate Myselfie is as much heart as it is crass.... [It] proves that laughing at yourself can help overcome even the most embarrassing experiences.... Shane may 'hate his selfie,' but his millions of fans will love it.” (AccessHollywood.com)"This book is a haven for difference in a sea of more of the same with YouTuber books. The essay approach really worked for the book." (The Guardian)

My 11 year old daughter insisted I get her this book. Shane Dawson is one of her favorite Youtubers. Since its a book and it would actually engage her in reading I figured what the heck. She has been enjoying it ever since it arrived.Just a heads up for people that might worry about the book language and content - it does contain foul language and some stories that might not be appropriate to young readers. If your child is watching him on YouTube then you’re probably okay with what they might be exposed to in the book.
Ok so its Shane Dawson so its gonna be explicit, but I got this for my friend since she loves watching his videos and I read a few chapters before I had to wrap it up and give it to her. The way Shane writes is hilarious, the way he looks on his life going about it with jokes is something I can relate to and I am sure that everyone else can too nowadays! I was on the edge about it thinking it was going to end up being pretty boring, but man was I wrong! I cound't put it down!! If you're looking for something comical but also sensible and warms your heart, go for this! You will not be disappointed!! Shane rocks and shows you how to block haters like a BOSS.
This is the second book of his that I read. The first book, I loved and was amazed at how much I loved it. This one I liked a lot but it didn't make me laugh out loud or cry the way the first one did. It's still a worthwhile read and although I'm not his "target audience" I totally enjoyed it. I felt by the end of the book that I "Knew" Shane. My daughter who is twelve loves the book. I'm ok with her reading it. The book has some raunchy parts but if you have ever seen a Shane Dawson video you know he doesn't have the cleanest mouth. But his stories are definitely helpful and I interesting. I can excuse any number of penis or poop jokes if the essays are solid and they are.Hoping for a book three!
As a 33 year old I found myself on YouTube more and more on my free time and Shane was one YouTuber that caught my attention enough to subscribe to and set up notifications. His entertainment was right up my alley. I got myself into a new hobby of reading books and Shane's book was the second book I purchased (after Amy Shumers book) and enjoyed it enough to read through the whole thing in 5 nights. It had enough entertainment to have me chuckle a little laugh here and there out loud while reading it.
I love shane, I have for a long time, I'm sure I said something similar in my review for his last book. I think shane is an amazing memoirists, I really hope this is the second of many. Also, I'd read a full book written by his mom, were she to write one. It's obvious where shane got his sense of humor. As I also probably said last time, I think anyone who loves david sedaris and/or augusten burroughs would love shane.
Awesome book. Great sense of humor, doesn't shy away from including all of the cringe-worthy details and awkward trials of life. It feels extremely relatable, real, and optimistic in spite of everything that happens in this. I really felt bad during the dark parts of this book but awesome during the parts when he got validation and acceptance from others. My favorite part of the narration is how he is able to see the humor in unfortunate events and make fun of life.
I've loved shane's videos for a while now and his book is just too damn funny. It's super relatable, and super hilarious, while also touching some serious subjects like body image, sexuality, religion, financial struggles, and health. SO GOOD. ITS AMAZING. I feel like high school students will especially enjoy this, along with young college students. Might be a bit mature for children just entering, or in the middle of, middle school. I would 100% recommend
If you love Shane Dawson's content, then you'll love his books. That's a fact. He writes as he speaks and his "essays" are both hilarious and insightful! These glimpses into his life & childhood are slightly different than he presents them on YouTube - in that, you'll find extra thoughtful details and real descriptions of people he's known. I LOVED reading it. Shane's writing is good fun and I adore learning more about him and his beliefs and experiences. Both books are proudly on my shelf!
